Things to do in Venus Bay

Venus Bay is a lovely coastal village only a 2 hour drive from Melbourne. The majestic Cape Liptrap Coastal Park borders the entire Venus Bay region, making it a haven for native wildlife including birds, wombats, kangaroos and echidnas. Boasting 26km of pristine beaches, it is the perfect place for relaxing, walking, fishing or fun beach-play with the family. Below are some of our favourite things to do when at Venus Bay.

Beaches

Venus Bay boasts 5 beautiful surf beaches which seem to go on forever. Perfect for an early morning walk or take in a breathtaking sunset. During peak time the Venus Bay No. 1 Beach is patrolled by the local surf lifesaving club during the summer months so take care when swimming at unpatrolled beaches. You may also like to venture to Walkerville South which has a lovely little bay beach with rock pools and little sandy coves to explore.

Walking

A variety of coastal walks exist along the shoreline between Venus Bay and Waratah Bay as well as around Anderson Inlet where sheltered trails can lead you to the pristine wetlands and sandy coves. Take in the rugged beauty of remote sections of the coast, most of which is accessible only by foot.

Bike Riding

The streets of Venus Bay are fairly flat and therefore great for bike riding if you like to ride your bike. There is new bike track of approx. 5km leading from Venus Bay and winds along the Tarwin River to the next small town – Tarwin Lower, with fishing and picnicking spots along the way.

Playgrounds

There are several Venus Bay playgrounds the kids will love exploring. Jupiter Park is the main playground situated on Jupiter Boulevard, the main street of Venus Bay. It has a full range of facilities including colourful play equipment, sheltered picnic area with table and BBQ, basketball court, grassed areas and public toilets. Another lovely playground, which includes a wooden ship, can be found at the end of Fishermans Road next to the jetty which also has undercover picnic tables and BBQ. Take the kids to the bird hide to spot the local seabirds as they look out over the salt water marshes.

Fishing and Boating

Venus Bay is haven for fishing with great surf fishing off any of the Venus Bay beaches, or try your luck off one of the many boardwalks along the picturesque Tarwin Lower River.  The Venus Bay boat ramp is located down Fishermans Jetty Road in the Second Estate allowing access to Anderson Inlet.  There is a great pier located here as well as a playground, BBQ facilities and and picnic tables. A lovely spot for an outing with birdlife and  beautiful views of the inlet and wetlands. The sheltered waters of Anderson Inlet offer Bass, Flathead, Salmon, Whiting, Mullet, Trevally and Garfish. A bag limit of two litres per person per day applies to the collection of Pipis. Oh, and don’t forget your recreational fishing license –  you can call into the local ‘Venus Bay Fishing-Beach-Surf’ shop to arrange this and pick up bait and any other fishing gear you might need.

Golf

The beautiful Leongatha Golf Course is located less than 30 mins from Venus Bay.  Rated in the top 100 public access courses in Australia, the 18 holes are varied and challenging. No matter the number of players, the course retains a sense of quiet seclusion with  terrain flanked by natural bushland. The club house has fresh bar food available and bar facilities.
